Development of a Service Learning and Teaching Model for a Project Course of Industrial Education Students
Abstract
Purposes of this study were to develop a service learning and teaching model for a project course of industrial education students, to investigate the learning achievement of students studied through the service learning and teaching model, and to survey the innovation adoption of community. The samples were 45 second-year undergraduate students, majored in Mechanical Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna Nan, who registered in the course of “Mechanical Technology Project” in the second semester of academic year 2013. Data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and a t-test. The results revealed that the developed model was designed by using the “Systems Approach” consisted of five major components. They were 1) input, 2) process, 3) control, 4) output, and 5) feedback with 12 minor components. They were 1) learning objectives, 2) analysis of students, 3) course design, 4) course activities, 5) development and selection of learning materials, 6) specification of teachers’ roles, 7) stimulation of motivation in learning, 8) operation in service learning and teaching, 9) monitoring and controlling the students' learning, 10) monitoring the learning during the teaching period, 11) effectiveness of learning and teaching, and 12) providing feedback for improvement. The model was validated at the highest level by the experts. The students achievement was significantly higher, at the level of .01, than the criteria of 80 percent of the total score. The community adoption of innovation provided by the students indicated that the extent of innovation adoption was at a “high” level. The innovation adoption components were rated as confirmation, implementation, persuasion, decision, and knowledge respectively.
